EarthCal v0.9

EarthCal v0.9
New tools in v0.9 to manage your events, tasks, reminders and cycles

With the new year comes a new spin around the sun. And with it, an upgrade of EarthCal!

EarthCal is a little project I've been working on for the last few years.

Back when I painted landscapes, I was frustrated that the cycles of the seasons, the planets in the sky, the salmon in the river, and the subtle shift in the moon’s phase and distance, despite their importance, weren't captured by my rectangular wall calendar.

EarthCal is a circular calendar that aims to do just that.

Version 0.9 is now available as a full Ubuntu desktop app. If you're not running Ubuntu, no problem! You can access it on the web at https://cal.earthen.io and make use of all its functionality on your phone or desktop.

Down the road, I will get to macOS and Windows versions. However, for the moment I am focusing on the platforms that I use myself!

The new month view in dark mode.

Version 0.9 includes some major upgrades:

  • The cycle of the black stork is now included.
  • You can now open each month to view its days in detail.
  • You can now use a Buwana account to log in and save/sync your data.
  • You can move forward decades or centuries into the future or past to see the position of the planets.

Personally, I use it to keep track of my events, cycles, goals, and to-dos.
Every day, I open it up and check out where we are in the solar system (right now, we're in alignment with Saturn and Venus, making for a great display in the night sky!). The calendar shows me the phases of the moon and the planets (Venus is coming up on its crescent phase early this year!).

I can also see that the gray whales are resting in the lagoons of Baja California (FYI to my friend Nik, who lives nearby!) and that the black storks are nesting in South Africa (heads up, Shilo!).

Each of these is a little nudge to think beyond the walls of my own myopic personal world. It helps me remember and sync with the great and true rhythms of the solar system, of Earth, and of the other incredible creatures with whom we share a common home.

Feel free to check out and use the EarthCal calendar, too. It’s totally free and hopefully helpful!

Enjoy!
