A Grey month. A Glimmer of Green
On a dark month, we launch GoBrik 3.0 with hope for a green way forward.
This month has been grey. With the results of the American elections and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza (the human and ecological impacts of bombs being dropped) it has been a dark and foreboding month for the biosphere.
We do however, have a glimmer of green to share with you today.
As promised, we have released our GoBrik 3.0 app!
It quietly went live on November 3rd. Some of you have been logging your ecobricks as we resolved some bugs. We apologize for the delay in our announcement. However, it is at long last fully running smoothly. You can now login, activate your account, see your old ecobricks and add new ones...
Its been a long journey in making!
Our Global Ecobrick Alliance team realized five years ago, that to fulfill our mission of being green, we had to rebuild our web and app infrastructure from the ground up. Our volunteer team set about purging on reliance on for-profit corporate services. We've been working on this slow and steady every since.
While our new GoBrik 3.0 app is much simpler than the one you are used to, our foundation is solid.
We are ecstatic that our code is now 100% open source, that our servers are not owned by Google or Amazon, and that our data is 100% in our own databases. GoBrik is firstly designed along earthen principles to minimize grey impacts, maximize green impacts, and account for these impacts in bytes, biodiversity, and carbon.
Second, in terms of infrastructure: Our development team prioritized setting up our own login system– this way we wouldn't have to depend on third-party corporate services like Apple login, Google login, or Facebook connect. We're calling these Buwana accounts (more on this later!)
Consequently, while GoBrik 3.0 may not have many features at the moment, it provides the foundation for us to build all sorts of great, green regenerative services in the near and long term.
This month's dark political context reminds us precisely why we embarked on this course. Given our ecological and ethical principles, the time is nigh to transition from corporations and currencies connected to genocide and ecocide.
Our tech stack now enables us to do just this in the coming months. Stay posted as we add new functionality to GoBrik to serve our ecobrickers, the month and planet Earth.
We look forward to seeing you on the new GoBrik,
Russell & the GEA Center Circle
P.S. One of the other new and super exciting features of the new GoBrik is the consolidation of all our Earthen newsletter in one place. As you set up your GoBrik account you can sign up for various newsletter subscriptions that we now offer– like my personal blog, gobrik notifications, trainer and general news. As we move forward we envision this as an alternative media platform for all things green.
