The Great GoBrik Migration

The Great GoBrik Migration
Ecobricks migrating from our old server to our new.

Dear Trainers,

Phew... its been a full month! Our apologies for the lull in the updates. Lots has been happening.

The GEA center circle has been focused on three massive moves.

First, the Indonesian team is setting up our Indonesian based organization entity (called a "Yayasan"). Second, our development team has been focused on migrating GoBrik off our corporate (and costly!) database server to our own (contributed by a Jakarta server company for free!). Third, we've been running workshops, selling earthwands and plastic offsets to cover the costs of both.

This month, Aang reached out to the Indonesian trainers for 100,000 IDR (about 6.20 $USD) to cover our database bill. A big thank you to everyone who contributed directly and through plastic offsetting! We're about 75$ short of covering the bill. I've got some personal funds that have come in and am happy to buy some offsets myself to cover this. However, by all means if you can chip in, it would be most appreciated!

Your Computational Help Needed

By covering this bill, we keep our main GoBrik up til the end of July for our Dev team to get more work done on the transition to our own server and system. Meanwhile, they could really use your computation help! We need to transfer a backlog of ecobricks from before 2021 to the brikchain. The only way to do this, is an API connection between the old and new database.

You can help by clicking on the link below and keeping your computer and a browser window open for as long as you can spare. The page that opens will trigger the ecobrick database transfers and run them in the background:

https://ecobricks.org/scripts/process_ecobrick.php

Note, the script uses minimal bandwith and almost no space on your computer. The process takes place on the server. However, although the processing runs continuously, it often fails, and requires a refresh of the page when it stalls.

GoBrik 3.0!

Meanwhile, GoBrik 3.0 system is starting to take shape. We're really excited to have our own platform and system that we're 100% in control of. We hope that we can start shifting platforms in about a month. Maybe less. Maybe more.

However, please note... we'll lose many features that we've come to rely on from our current version of GoBrik. 😪

Our dev team is working hard to migrate functionality, but it looks like it will be just the bare minimum of being able to log in with your GoBrik account (it will be called something different!) and to log an ecobrick. That's all we'll have up and running at first. Things like the GoBrik store, Course listing, Course registration, the Trainer panel, offseting and more will take alot more time and effort to build out as per our 2024 Development Roadmap.😪

This loss will be offset by some massive foundational upgrades:

  • Super fast loading and logging.
  • No cost for the GEA!
  • Multi-lingual: French, English, Indonesian and Spanish from the get-go
  • Improved user interface
  • New account system

New Starter and Trainer Workshops Scheduled

Meanwhile, we've got an English and Indonesian starter workshop scheduled this month. And an International ToT (led by Lucie in English). Please refer any interested ecobrickers in your community to join:
